Concrete Aprons: What They Are, Benefits, and How They Enhance Your Property

A concrete apron is a functional and aesthetic addition to your property, serving multiple purposes from enhancing curb appeal to mitigating any hazards a sinking driveway will present. Any concrete apron can be customized to suit your home’s requirements in terms of style, length, and width.

Exterior of a residential garage with two white garage doors. The driveway in front of the garage has a recently paved concrete apron, which transitions into the asphalt driveway. There are two red potted plants placed symmetrically in front of the garage doors. A trash and recycling bin are located on the right side, near the corner of the house. In the background, there is a neatly landscaped yard with a large shrub and trees, and the sunset creates a warm glow in the sky. The house has light beige siding, and two decorative outdoor wall lights are mounted above the garage doors.

A concrete apron can serve many functions:

  • A new concrete apron will eliminate the dip that has formed between the driveway and the garage floor.
  • It can add curb appeal to your home. Its clean and polished appearance contributes to an attractive exterior.
  • It can help manage stormwater. When installed properly, a concrete apron will disperse water and eliminate pooling in unwanted areas.
  • When used at the end of a driveway, it creates a smooth transition from the street level to the driveway level, preventing a sharp drop-off that could damage vehicles.
  • Concrete aprons offer a more budget-friendly solution to an issue that does not require a full replacement.

Concrete aprons are generally 3-5 feet wide, running the full width of your driveway. Depending on their placement—such as near a garage or at the street end—the length may vary. Typically, aprons are 4 inches thick and reinforced with ⅜ rebar to strengthen the slab.

Concrete Apron Installation

Installing a concrete apron involves several key steps to ensure longevity and durability. When choosing Aurora you can expect your concrete apron project to be completed in two phases.

Phase 1, the demolition crew will arrive to complete the demolition and preparation of the apron area. This includes cutting into the existing slab, removing the existing material, backfilling any open cavities in the block foundation, compacting the base, and reinforcing with rebar.

Phase 2 is where your project comes to life. Our skilled concrete finishers will arrive and complete any necessary forming before the concrete truck arrives. Once the finishers are ready to begin, the concrete will be placed and finished with attention and care. After the concrete apron is finished, you will notice the clean edges surrounding the apron, the precise tool-cut joints that will allow adequate relief, and the foam expansion between your garage floor and the new apron. In total, you can expect our crews to be on-site for 4-6 hours during the entire project.
